History of TasSciFi
The inaugural Tas Sci-Fi Convention was held on May 30—June 1st 2008 at the Wrest Point Boardwalk Gallery Convention Centre, with the second event from May 15 – 17 2009.
Over 3,200 people turned up for the first ever full scale Tasmanian Sci Fi Convention over that weekend from kids dressed up as their favourite superheroes, to the Premier of Tasmania David Bartlett.
In 2009, we increased our numbers to over 4,000 visitors to the convention.
Everything from Batman to Star Wars, 50’s Sci Fi to Japanese Anime was on show during both events with over 50 tables of Science Fiction fans exhibiting their wares, as well as several merchandise stands.
During the 2009 event, we were lucky enough to have a full scale Speeder Bike for photo opportunities on show, a larger than life size Tardis and several Daleks buzzing around.
We were featured heavily in the media, with WIN, Southern Cross, and the ABC all filming and showing the event on the evening news, as well as heavy radio coverage.
The ABC Collectors Program featured us during a full length segment during one episode in 2008.
During 2009 we were lucky enough to have many members of Novus Ordo, The Australian Costumers Guild and the 501st onsite. People were amazed to be greeted at the door by Stormtroopers in costume!... Hobart didn’t know what had hit it!.
We gave away over $4,000 in prizes during the initial 2008 Convention.
This grew to over $6,000 in prizes during the 2009 Convention including a life size ultimate edition Darth Vader costume, kindly donated by our friends at Costume Box.
Competitions to win prizes are our popular Quiz (The Quizinator), attendees who turned up in costume and several other guessing competitions as well as lucky door prizes.
Thanks to all 10 of our 2009 sponsors (Costume Box, Village Cinemas, What’s New Eastlands, Wrest Point, Madman, Ellison and Hawker Bookshop, Area 52, Dymocks, JB Hi-Fi, and The Australian Costumers Guild) for making it such a special event.
In 2009, we were lucky enough to have the services of the great Jonathan Hardy who voiced Rygel in the TV series Farscape. Jonathan was amazing and we would welcome him back anyday.
Nikki Dinn, a local Sci-Fi Fantasy author was also onsite promoting her books Swordcallers 1 and 2 – Thanks Nikki!, You were also fantastic!!.
2010 promises to be an event that can not be missed. Stay tuned to this site for more info or subscribe (insert link here) to our newsletter.
